I’ve always believed that architectural detail on the wall gives any area an extra dimension of distinction. Over the past few years, the white shiplaped wall has become ubiquitous; it appears on almost every home tour. I like the look of planked walls, and in my powder room I installed some white shiplap myself under wallpaper.
I enjoy the crisp white appearance of shiplap walls and the subtle striping that results from the raised paneling that is placed on top of one another. It offers a lovely backdrop against which to stack decor, paintings, and furniture.

But today I provide a few alternatives to think about for those of you who believe the shiplap aesthetic is becoming as common as subway tile.

Although there is always the possibility of custom or prefabricated work, simple designs are simple to DIY. The geometric grid installation is becoming more and more popular, and for good reason—it uses strips of wood to create traditional square or rectangle designs. When painted in tone on tone hues, it looks really good.
