Chances are, if you’re like most people, your home contains some scratched wood furniture. THIS QUICK AND SIMPLE REPAIR FOR A WOOD SCRATCH WORKS SO WELL AND TAKES JUST A FEW MINUTES. READ ON TO LEARN HOW TO QUICKLY AND EASILY TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCRATCHED FURNITURE!
Do you own wood furniture that has been scratched? But do you hesitate to begin because of the prospect of entirely restoring it? We had exactly the same sentiments regarding the desk in our home. But this quick and simple “repair” (it’s not really a repair; I’m not sure what else to term it) method for wood scratches worked so beautifully. Our workstation was restored in less than 5 minutes!
At this point, we have had it for more than 15 years, and we paid a large sum of money for it. When we were married, it was the first piece of furniture we bought that was “genuine.” We also had two cats at the time. The fact that they didn’t deliberately scratch stuff was incredibly fortunate for us. By simply standing up on the desk and moving around on it, their claws nonetheless caused quite a bit of damage.
Our desk had cat scratches on it, plus it had been moved and bumped into innumerable times during the previous 15 years. No other way to put it exists. Normally, we would just ignore it, but a few months ago, we gave our foyer a facelift with this do-it-yourself plank wall. I didn’t understand how terribly terrible the desk looked until I started taking pictures of it. I had no time at all to completely refinish the desk because I had a deadline to meet for the plank wall post.
I quickly raced out to our garage and grabbed my favorite stain, which I knew would match the stain on the desk perfectly. I intended to apply stain evenly across the desk’s surface in the hopes that it would appear a little more acceptable in our plank wall images.
Imagine my astonishment when I discovered that this simple approach was so effective that I don’t believe we will ever sand down and “properly” refinish our desk. What a MASSIVE victory!
I should probably mention that our desk, which we bought from Pottery Barn more than 15 years ago, is a distressed piece of furniture. Therefore, it purposefully had some “imperfections.”
I’m not sure how well this scratch removal technique would have worked if our desk had been a formal china hutch that was expected to be flawless. However, if the piece you have scratches, dents, or dings on embraces some imperfection as an integral part of the design, you will adore this wood scratch restoration technique.

A DIY “REPAIR” FOR A WOOD SCRATCH TUTORIAL SUPPLIES REQUIRED: Paper towels, Wax Wash Remover Behlen Solar Lux Dye Stain (I used American Walnut) solution of vinegar and water HOW THE DESK APPEARED EARLIER… Here is a picture of our workstation that was taken before I started. See all those regions of damage that are light in color? Yikes. (PS- Before you inquire, the DIY vent cover you see under the desk is what we constructed because the builder-grade one that was previously there was simply too unsightly for our new plank wall, lol.)
Here are some additional close-ups.
STEPS FOR FAST AND EASY SCRATCH REMOVAL: 1) I started by thoroughly cleaning the desk with a homemade mixture of water and vinegar. To make sure that any wax finish that might have been on the desk was completely removed, I cleaned it once again with Mohawk’s Wax Wash Remover . Simply spray the Wax Wash Remover on and wipe it off to use. The spray did release some fumes, so try to complete your work outside if you can.
2) After that, I applied my Behlen Solar Lux Dye Stain to a piece of paper (you can see how well loved this stain is, lol). Then I immediately topped the pre-stain with a thin coat of the stain! Take note that I stained the entire surface of the desk, not just the harmed sections, with one application.
I really pressed down on the paper towel for some of the bigger dings and dents to make sure the stain completely covered the exposed wood.
3) After applying the stain, I lightly buff out any extra stain using fresh paper towels. At this point, keep in mind that your piece can feel a little sticky. Do not panic! The adhesion on our desk had completely disappeared by the following morning.
THE OUTCOMES! So that’s it. Simplest procedure EVER! And check out the photos from before and after!
Here’s a shot of our newly remodeled desk in action in our foyer. We are overjoyed!
